September 5, 2014 11:22 AM |

The first weather system of the week, which brought good showers over Gujarat, was expected to fizzle out in the Arabian Sea. However, the system kept on lingering and moved closer, bringing rain bearing thick clouds in Gujarat including Saurashtra and Kutch (S&K).

There is also a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and a western disturbance over J&K. The north –south alignment of these systems has brought good amount of rain showers over respective region. Rainfall figures in the last 48 hours for some stations of Gujarat are as following:-

Rain received on 5th September, 2014

Dwarka received 12.8 mm of rain, Porbandar 15.6 mm and Baroda 17.4 mm, Deesa 22.2 mm, Surat 16 mm and it was 13.2 mm for Rajkot.

Rain received on 4th September, 2014

Clearly, system of S&K has weakened and according to weather forecast by Skymet Meteorology division in India, the amount of rain is likely to become minimal in the next 24 hours. However, with these fresh rains, S&K division of Gujarat is likely to inch towards achieving normal rainfall for the season. Monthly average rainfall figures during Monsoon in India

Saurashtra Rajkot 115 mm 216 mm 127 mm 78 mm
Gujarat Region Ahmedabad 95 mm 281 mm 235 mm 96 mm

The table above also proves that such good Monsoon rain in the month of September is against the norms. Nevertheless, last year also Gujarat was lashed by heavy rains during this month.
