Hawaii’s Big Island crippled by Tropical Storm Darby

July 25, 2016 3:22 PM |

Darby-trackOn Saturday afternoon, tropical storm Darby made landfall on Hawaii's Big Island, very close to the place where tropical storm Iselle made landfall in 2014. The storm continued its journey towards Kauai on Monday morning.

In the image above we can see the expected journey of Darby.

Darby will continue to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds throughout Monday. The storm will gradually weaken. The Big Island has already endured the worst from Darby. Isolated places along the eastern and southern slopes of the mountains could receive very heavy showers as well. We cannot rule out few incidents of localized flash flooding.

Flood waters have blocked a road in the Hamakua district of the Big Island. Parts of the Interstate H-1 were also closed due to incessant rains on Sunday night.

More than 5 inches of rainfall was recorded along the eastern slopes of Mauna Loa, in a span of 24 hours ending early Sunday morning.
