Paris chokes under worst winter air pollution in a decade

Paris Smog

Commuters in Paris are restricted to use free public transport since past couple of days as winter air pollution spiked in the city. To reduce the levels of increasing air pollution, odd-even system has been implemented which is why some cars have been barred from the roads.

Paris, the beautiful city of lights, has been under the glimpse of prolonged air pollution that is reported to be worst in last 10 years.

As per experts, the cause of high air pollution levels around the capital is the combination of emissions from vehicles and domestic wood fires and also the windless conditions. For almost more than a week, the readings of PM10 have been reported to be more than 80 micrograms per cubic metre of air particles, thus prompting the pollution alert over the capital.

Until the meteorological situation and emissions remain the same, the end of pollution spike is not expected.

If the grim situation continues,  schools can be closed and some industrial activity will also be suspended.

City authorities have also asked Parisians to limit travel by car and whenever possible go for car pooling. The ban on use of personal vehicles may persist for few more days if air quality does not improve.
