Dry weather in Alabama and Georgia has led to extreme drought conditions in parts of both the states. As per the National Drought Mitigation Center, northeastern Alabama and few parts of northwestern and eastern Georgia are suffering from extreme drought conditions.

As claimed by the U.S. Drought Monitor, as close to half of Georgia, with approximately 6.7 million residents, is witnessing some level of drought. This includes metro Atlanta, however, conditions are still favorable in South Georgia. While the northern half of the state falls under worse drought conditions. Parts of Jackson and DeKalb counties are basically under ‘extreme’ drought conditions.

On the other hand, almost 60% of Alabama including about 2.5 million of the state’s population is suffering from some level of drought. According to drought monitor, the percentage is worse as compared to the drought-suffering percent last week. However, it is better than the situation two weeks ago.

The drought conditions are even worse for parts of eastern Alabama, however, situations are likely to improve for the western and central parts of the state.

The U.S. Drought Monitor also states that it is the first time since February 2012 that any part of Alabama has faced such critical situation. Although North Alabama, especially in the Marshall County has witnessed some amount of rainfall but unfortunately Jackson and DeKalb counties have observed less than 1 inch of rain.

The drought conditions have worsen in counties including all of Etowah and Cherokee as well as most of St. Clair, Blount and Randolph and a portion of Chambers. However, Tuscaloosa and the southern ends of Jefferson and Shelby counties have witnessed worse drought conditions.
