Benefits of eating chilli

The usual perception states that one should avoid spicy food and limit his/her consumption of chilli. But in some countries and cultures, chilli is used as a spicing and flavoring agent in several dishes. This gives birth to the debate about the usage of chilli in our daily diet. Other than spice and flavor, what does chilli bring to the table?

Speaking of chillies, we usually consume green or red chillies. Green chillies are unripe and hence aren’t as spicy and strong as the red ones. But both carry important health benefits for us. In India, both red and green chilli form an important part of the local cuisine. Indians make use of chilli in vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes. Chilli is also added to all kinds of snacks and condiments.

Chilli contains up to seven times the Vitamin C level of an orange. It is also helpful if you are experiencing sinus congestion. Studies show that regular and moderate consumption of chilli helps in relieving migraines. Chilli also helps in fighting off muscle, joint, and nerve pain. People suffering from acute digestion problems are advised to involve chilli in their diet depending on the medical condition. Chilli is also a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin E, folic acid, beta-carotene, and potassium.

There are several simple ways in which you can increase your consumption of chillies. Add it to your breakfast by mixing it in your omelet; garnish your lunch with green chillies; look for recipes which use chillies as the main source of flavor and taste. But be sure to set a limit for consumption of chilli. Chilli must always be taken in moderate amounts. Excessive consumption of chilli can actually cause problems for you.

Also, be sure to couple your chilli intake with a lot of neutralizing foods. These can be foods rich in fibre. You can also add dairy products to balance any meal. Chilli adds a lot to your overall health by improving insulin regulation, influencing glucose levels, reducing bad cholesterol, and even improving your quality of sleep. Chillies also enhance your overall cardiovascular functioning. Chillies are loaded with anti-oxidants and must be a part of your regular diet. History proves that the consumption of chilli is not just limited to its spicy and flavorful characteristics. The health benefits of chilli are another reason to spice up your meal every day.
