Delhi Monsoon rains break record, highest in last 10 years

July 30, 2016 10:43 AM |

Delhi rainsTorrential Monsoon rains were expected to lash Delhi-NCR but nobody had expected such intense showers. Monsoon remained vigorous over the national capital, giving first three-digit rainfall of the ongoing Monsoon season.

Palam Observatory recorded whopping 144 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday. Out of this, 80 mm of rains were recorded in span of mere three hours from 5:30 am to 8:30 am.

It is also the highest rainfall recorded in span of 24 hours during the last 10 years. Prior to this, the record stood at 126 mm of rain on July 28, 2009.

Fairly widespread heavy Monsoon rains were recorded over entire Delhi-NCR, bringing the city to halt.

Not only this, rain bearing clouds are still hovering over the city since early Saturday morning. Some of the areas have already started raining and other areas are likely to follow soon.

According to Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed to the Monsoon trough which is running in close proximity of Delhi-NCR. A cyclonic circulation is also marked over Haryana and adjoining areas. Moreover, the Western Disturbance is also moving across Jammu and Kashmir.

As we proceed further, Monsoon trough will be now oscillating towards north, while the circulation is now prevailing over Haryana and Delhi. Both the systems will continue to give good Monsoon rains over the Delhi. However, this may not be as heavy as on Friday.

The heavy downpour has pulled down the maximum temperatures significantly. On Friday, the day maximum settled at 29.1°C that was five notches below normal.

We expect, maximum temperatures to settle on the lower side on Saturday also, between 26°C and 28°C.
