Assam battered by floods again, no relief likelyAssam has been experiencing very heavy rains since the past few days which have resulted in flash floods in the region. The state has been affected by floods several times during Monsoon, which has caused difficulties among the residents. This time, around seven districts have been facing floods with 2 lakh people being severely affected.

All the rivers in the state have been flowing above the danger level, particularly Brahmaputra in Dibrugarh and Jorhat district. The worst affected area is the Kokrajhar district situated in lower Assam where 87 villages have been completely flooded. More than 280 villages have been significantly affected due to floods. Also, more than 10,000 hectares of crop land has been submerged in rain water.

Around 45 relief camps have opened up in the state with 34 being in Kokrajhar itself. Around 17,000 people have been shifted to relief camps. Till now, no casualties have been reported. However, various roads and bridges have been damaged in the affected areas.

In the last 24 hours since 8:30 am on Wednesday, Mushalpur received a whopping 126 mm of rain and Gossaigaon observed 113 mm of rain. Also, Barpeta in the same time span recorded 125 mm of rainfall, Dibrugarh (67 mm), Guwahati (30 mm), and lakhimpur (33 mm).

Meghalaya has also been receiving heavy to very heavy rain for the past few days which has triggered a massive landslide at Ratachara and Thansen on National Highway 6, which has disconnected Mizoram, Southern Assam, Tripura, and a few parts of Manipur and Meghalaya from the rest of India.

Heavy rains in the catchment areas including Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan has resulted in the many rivers flowing above the danger mark. This situation is most likely to persist for the next 2 to 3 days.
