A terrifying incident took place on the Leh-Manali highway when a Bailey bridge on the Rohtang Tunnel project collapsed on Monday. What was more frightening was a truck that plunged into the water after the bridge suddenly collapsed.

Fortunately, the truck driver was rescued leading to no casualties. The under construction bridge that provided approach to the tunnel at the north portal near Telling village at Sissu in Lahaul and Spiti reportedly collapsed due to strong currents in the Chandra River.

The 8.8 km Rohtang tunnel is being constructed to curtail down the distance of Manali-Sarchu- Leh road by 46 km. Thus, making it India’s longest traffic tunnels once constructed. However, the tunnel would be reestablished within next four to five days added Chief Engineer of Rohtang Project Brigadier D N Bhatt.

Heavy showers and flash floods leading to landslides, also caused a lot of damage to the roads in the area. In fact, rains have battered most parts of the northern hills of India.

Moderate to heavy showers were observed over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Jammu even recorded a whopping 97 mm rainfall.

Let’s have a look at the rainfall observed in most parts of the northern hills in India in a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday:

Further, due to the northern movement of the axis of Monsoon trough towards the foothills of Himalayas, rain intensity is likely to pick up pace over the hilly regions of India.

Additionally, a fresh Western Disturbance is approaching the western Himalayas. Due to the combined effects of both these weather systems, rains are likely to increase over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. However, rains will gradually reduce over Jammu & Kashmir.
