Chennai may witness thundershowers soonChennai weather has remained exceptionally hot for the past few days. Temperatures have remained above the average levels throughout April. There has not even been one day when the maximum temperature has been recorded below 35 degrees.

Rains have also remained absent from Chennai for over a month now. While the city usually receives less than 10 mm rain in a month between February and April, not even a drop of rain has been recorded in April.

The average monthly rainfall in Chennai for April stands at 7.7 mm. There is a sudden increase in the rains during the month of May with the city receiving about 43.9 mm on an average due to increased Pre-Monsoon activities over Coastal Tamil Nadu.

Since the last two days, thundery clouds have been developing over Interior Tamil Nadu. Scattered thunderstorm activity has also been observed in Coimbatore and its adjoining districts as a trough is passing through Interior Tamil Nadu.

Now, outskirts of Chennai and neighbouring areas including Guduvanchery have already started witnessing thundershowers. These showers are likely to continue for a couple of hours or so. These rains are the first spell of Pre-Monsoon showers in Chennai. The city has received rain after more than  30 days.

During the next two to three days, Chennai may see more isolated thunderstorm activity with very light rain over a few areas. However, the weather conditions will remain sultry. Also, a few spells of thundershowers may occur in Chennai between May 10 and 15.

Weather models show that Pre-Monsoon activity is likely to pick up pace in many parts of Peninsular India including Chennai by the end of the month.
