Chennai rains remained far and few during the months of October and November. So much so that Northeast Monsoon remained subdued over the entire Southern Peninsular India. However, the month of December brought massive rains for the residents of Chennai.
Cyclone Vardah, which made a direct hit north of Chennai resulted in three digit rains over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. So much so that Chennai airport recorded a whopping 145 mm of rainfall in three hours. Chennaites were reminded of last year’s deluge which had wreaked havoc over the city.
This has not been the first cyclone to have occurred in the Northeast Monsoon season. The first cyclonic storm of the season, Kyant which formed in the Bay of Bengal around October end did not give any rains over Chennai as the system did not directly hit the Indian coastline.
Thus, Chennai only managed to received 22.4 mm of rainfall against 279.8 mm of rainfall. November was no different, and the capital city of Tamil Nadu only recorded 50.3 mm of rain against 407.4 mm of rainfall.
Thereafter, Cyclone Nada which was the second cyclone of the season hit the Andhra coast which revived Chennai rains and some good rains were witnessed. Cyclone Vardah was the one storm which gave very heavy rains and caused immense damage to life and property in the city and adjoining areas.
In fact, Chennai managed to receive a whopping 329 mm of rainfall in the first two weeks of December against its monthly average of 191 mm of rainfall.
However, the city did not manage to receive enough rains in the entire Northeast Monsoon. Despite the Godzilla cyclone, Chennai rains were below average. In fact, until now, including the months of November and the city has managed to receive 403 mm of rainfall against 877 mm rain which makes it 54 percent rain deficient.

Now, in the coming days, Chennai will only receive light rains and the intensity will not be high. Thus, the rainfall figures will continue to remain deficient only.
