Chennai set for a rainy weekend

Chennai rains

The Northeast Monsoon had bid adieu to the country on January 4 and left a trail of rainfall deficiency in Southern Peninsula. Moreover, ever since Cyclone Vardah brought torrential rains on December 13, Tamil Nadu has been witnessing elongated dry spell.

Though, in the last 24 hours, Coastal Tamil Nadu, particularly few parts of Chennai along with Puducherry, witnessed some short spell of rain. During the last 24 hours, Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai witnessed light wet spells. Puducherry too observed one millimeter of rain.

However, as per Skymet Weather, now the weather of Tamil Nadu is likely to become dry again. Sunny days are predicted to show up in the capital of the state. But, thereafter, the possibility of rain over the state during the weekend is predicted.

The reason for the upcoming rain over the state can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is likely to develop over the south-central Bay of Bengal. This is further expected to move towards Tamil Nadu coast and may induce a low-pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal between January 19 and January 20.

In the wake of this weather system, scattered rains are again predicted to commence over the state around January 21. Moreover, easterly waves in the Bay of Bengal could also result in a few moderate spells at a few pockets of Tamil Nadu, particularly over Chennai and Puducherry.

Furthermore, between January 23 and January 25, the second spell of light intensity is also foreseen. Parts of the coastal area are expected to witness scattered rains and thundershowers.

Hence, in a nutshell, it can be said that for few pockets of Tamil Nadu that includes Chennai and Puducherry, this is going to be a rainy weekend.
