Heavy rain threat remains over Uttarakhand, death toll rises to 38

Updated on July 2, 2016 06:30 PM: Heavy rains and cloudburst has thrown life out of gear for the residents of Uttarakhand. As per media reports, as many as 38 people have been killed until now and casualties are expected to keep on increasing as rescue and relief operations continue.

Both NDRF and SDRF teams have been carrying out relief work in full swing. Also, local police and disaster management are providing the much needed assistance.

Due to heavy rains, the Chamba-Rishikesh NH 94 is also blocked leaving travellers stranded. Also, heavy rains will continue to hamper the ongoing rescue operations. 

Heavy rain is expected over several districts of Uttarakhand during the next 24 to 48 hours. The possibility of flooding and landslides over these areas also cannot be ruled out.

Published on July 2, 2016 08:30 AM: Cloudburst due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand has caused 30 deaths in Chamoli district. Reports have also come in of eight casualties in Pithoragarh district as well. The entire state has been receiving heavy rain since about Thursday and as per officials, death toll is expected to increase even further. Due to flash floods in several areas, water levels have also risen.

One of the most affected areas is the Bastadi village in Pithoragarh district. Many people are still trapped under debris. Trees have been uprooted, houses damaged and a score still remain missing. To top it all, the region is still witnessing heavy rains which is only hampering the ongoing rescue operations.

Not only this, due to incessant rains accompanied with landslides, NH-58, which connects Rishikesh and Badrinath has been blocked near Devprayag leaving commuters stranded. Also, schools in Nainital have been closed due to forecast of inclement weather.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also sent its teams to the areas that have been reeling under these conditions. The relief and rescue operations are being undertaken by the Army and para military forces.

Now, during the next 24 hours, heavy rains are expected over many parts of the state. In fact, the possibility of very heavy rains also cannot be ruled out. During the next 2 to 3 days, the intensity of rains will only increase. Therefore, residents need to exercise more caution in the coming days. Also, heavy rains will continue to cause hindrances in the ongoing relief operations.
