Cyclone Vardah remnants to keep Chennai rains alive

December 14, 2016 1:20 PM |

Chennai rainsCyclone Vardah is now on the verge of fizzling out and is presently seen as a low pressure area over Coastal Karnataka and Southeast Arabian Sea. However, remnants of the system are still affecting the weather over Chennai.

At present also, the city is witnessing cloudy weather conditions. In wake of significant drop in rain, day maximums will also start increasing. This rise in mercury coupled with increased moisture levels will lead to formation of convective clouds over the city.

Thus, we can expect short spells of scattered rain and thundershowers over Chennai during the late afternoon or evening hours. These rains will further reduce on Thursday but isolated light rain cannot be ruled out.

According to Skymet Weather, another spell of rains is likely to approach Chennai from December 16. A fresh weather system is likely to develop in Southwest Bay of Bengal, which is likely to give some rains over the city.

Cyclone Vardah, which followed in quick succession of Cyclone Nada, gave some heavy to extremely heavy rains over the city. Squally winds with damage potential battered the entire city claiming around 12 lives in state capital itself.

Chennai had been highly rain deficient during October and November. In fact, November which is the rainiest month for the city with average rainfall of 407 mm, saw mere 50 mm of rain.

However, December started on a rainy note. Chennai has been recording on and off rains of varying intensity ever since the beginning of the month. Further, weather conditions seem to be favourable for the city to witness some more rainy spells.
