December 12: Fog in Bihar leads to train collision, tragedy avoided
Skymet has been saying that the belt of fog extending from Uttar Pradesh and foothills of Bihar to Sub Himalayan West Bengal is likely to reduce. On Friday morning, fog remained confined to east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and parts of Northeast India.
Today morning visibility reduced to 500 meters in Gorakhpur, Patna and Siliguri. Most vulnerable places like Bareilly, Khajuraho, Gwalior, Allahabad, Lucknow and Agra remained fog free today. In North India, Delhi witnessed shallow fog as visibility reduced to 650 meters.
Several trains to and from Patna Junction have been running behind schedule due to fog cover in and around the city. In fact, today morning a major mishap could have taken place when the North-East Express and Keul-Patna train, running on the same track, collided at Barh station near Patna. The accident raised a chaotic situation on the platform but no casualty was reported.

December 11: Band of cloud dislodges fog in East India
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Northeast India have been bearing the brunt of dense to very dense fog for more than a week now. However in last 24 hours, fog eased out in most of the places except for Varanasi, which witnessed dense fog with zero visibility for an extended duration.
Gorakhpur is one of the most favoured places for winter fog and had been witnessing zero visibility since the beginning of the winter season. Fog reduced in this station as well with improved visibility of 800 meters in the early morning hours.
Most vulnerable places like Bareilly, Khajuraho, Gwalior and Agra remained fog free today. In Allahabad, Lucknow, Patna and various other places witnessed only shallow fog for a short duration.

December 10: Fog in North India
Fog is likely to make a comeback in Delhi and other parts of North India by next week. As of now fog remains confined to Uttar Pradesh, foothills of Bihar and extending up to Sub Himalayan West Bengal. On Wednesday morning, Bareilly, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Varanasi witnessed zero visibility for extended duration.

December 9: The peculiar aspect of fog in India this winter
On Tuesday morning, general visibility reduced to 500 meters in Delhi, Agartala and Kolkata. Visibility in Allahabad and Amritsar dropped to 800 meters while in Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Varanasi it remained nil.
In the normal course of action, northwest India is the first region to witness fog and then it gradually penetrates from west to east. December 8: Temporary relief from dense fog in East India
Gorakhpur in east Uttar Pradesh continued to witness nil visibility on Monday morning. Sky remained obscure till the early morning. The city has been observing dense to very dense fog for more than a week now. This was followed by Bhubaneswar at 50 m that witnessed fog for the first time this season. December 5: Fog becomes denser and wider in East India
Fog, a common feature during winters has largely been confined to parts of East India so far. Gorakhpur in east Uttar Pradesh has been the most affected region. In the last one week the city has been observing dense to very dense fog with visibility dropping to nil.
Other places in Uttar Pradesh to have observed fog today was Allahabad, where visibility dropped to nil at 7 am. Varanasi and Lucknow too observed very dense fog with visibility dropping to 50 m early in the morning today.
In Bihar, Gaya witnessed dense fog and the visibility recorded was 200 meters. Patna also observed shallow fog with visibility recorded up to 500 meters only. No major air or rail traffic interruptions were reported from both the cities.
Agartala and Guwahati in Northeast India also observed shallow fog. Imphal, the capital of Manipur was the only place in the region to observe very dense fog, with visibility of only 100 meters. December 5: Bangalore holds distinction of clear visibility conditions
All stations across Peninsular India are reporting haze now-a-days but Bangalore holds the distinction of witnessing clear visibility conditions across the country.
It is the only station which is reporting CAVOK, i.e. cloud and visibility ok at present. South India generally escapes the effects of fog but coastal stations witness sea fog. Thus, cities like Kochi, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Trivandrum are reporting light haze. For full story click here.

November 26: Amritsar, Allahabad and Gorakhpur witnessing fog
On November 26, Amritsar reported thick fog with the lowest visibility of 350 meters, followed by Gorakhpur at 800 meters.
Similarly on November 25, Agartala reported thick fog with visibility dropping to 300 meters. In Guwahati the visibility was 500 meters, while Amritsar and Allahabad in the northern plains reported visibility of 600 meters and 800 meters, respectively due to fog.

November 20, 12.40 (IST): Fog in India
On November 20, Amritsar witnessed thick fog as the visibility dropped to 500 meters. The city observed fog for a longer duration extending from 8 pm on Wednesday night till 7 am on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Delhi and Gorakhpur experienced shallow fog with visibility reducing to 800 meters.
November 19, 11.30 (IST): Persistent below normal temperatures are giving rise to poor visibility conditions. On Wednesday morning, Delhi experienced poor visibility for extended duration stretching from midnight to 8:30 am, with the lowest visibility at 700 meters between 2:30 am and 7:30 am.
Patna had the lowest visibility of 600 meters, followed by Amritsar with 700 meters and Gorakhpur and Agra reporting 800 meters.
November 18, 10.30 (IST): Fog continues to be city specific, as North India is witnessing dry continental winds. On November 18, Gorakhpur had the lowest visibility of 600 meters, followed by Agra, Patna and Amritsar reporting 800 meters.
In Delhi, fog is conspicuous by its absence, however, it is experiencing misty mornings.
November 17, 12.25 (IST):In the absence of any moisture, Delhi is not observing fog but winter chill. Even though temperatures have gone below normal in most parts of north India, fog is still restricted to be city specific.
Due to local factors like presence of water bodies and situated near foothills, Patna, Gorakhpur, Allahabad and Amritsar today witnessed Fog during the wee hours.
While Amritsar witnessed thick fog as the visibility reduced to 400 meters, Patna, Gorakhpur and Allahabad had shallow fog. The visibility reduced to 800 meters in these places.
November 15, 16.00 (IST): Strong southwesterly winds blowing over Delhi/NCR kept fog away on Saturday morning. Nevertheless, fog was observed in pockets of Punjab and the foothills of eastern Himalayas.
Visibility dropped to 500 meters in Amritsar after sunrise, while in Agra shallow fog was witnessed and lowest visibility recorded was 800 meters. Lowest general visibility in Patna was 800 meters. Guwahati also witnessed some fog today morning and visibility dropped to 300 meters.
November 14, 17.00 (IST): Fog in India
Delhi had respite from fog on Friday morning. But general visibility reduced to 800 meters in Agra and Allahabad.
Chennai also reported fog for the first time this season, where visibility reduced to 800 meters for almost 2 hours. This could be attributed to humidity present in the air due to continuous rain and very light winds.
In Northeast India, Agartala reported fog and visibility reduced to 600 meters.
November 13, 16.10 (IST): Fog in Delhi
There is no relief from the fog in Delhi but air, rail and road traffic still remains unaffected.
The drop in day temperature to 27.5°C on Wednesday was manifested in reduced visibility since 9 pm. General visibility reduced to 600 meters at 3 am and lasted for about 4 hours. The weather cleared up and visibility improved after 10.30 am on Thursday morning.
November 12, 15.40 (IST): Fog in India
For the first time this season, Hyderabad and Kolkata also woke up to a foggy morning on Wednesday. The visibility reduced to 250 and 800 meters in Hyderabad and Kolkata, respectively. Delhiites also witnessed a foggy morning as general visibility reduced to 800 meters.
Fog in East India
Surprisingly, Gorakhpur and Allahabad showed some improvement and witnessed a clear weather during early morning hours. However, Agra continued to witness shallow fog.
November 7, 15.30 (IST): Fog in Goa
On Friday morning, general visibility reduced to 100 meters along the west coast in places like Goa, Karwar and Mangalore. This could be due to sea fog, also termed as steaming fog, formed by evaporation of water from a warm sea surface into cold overlying air.
With high humidity levels and maximums in mid-thirties, weather in Goa is a little sticky during afternoon hours. Visitors will however, enjoy cool nights with minimums in low-twenties.
Fog in East India
Allahabad, Gorakhpur and Agra witnessed a shallow layer of fog. Visibility reduced to 800 meters for a short duration around sunrise.
Fog in Delhi
The national capital was relatively better as general visibility did not drop below 1000 meters today morning. The runway visual range (RVR) continues to remain more than 2000 meters.
November 6, 12.30 (IST): Fog in Delhi
Fog in Delhi on Thursday was relatively shallow. The general visibility descended only during early morning hours around 3 am and remained less than 1000 meters till about 7 am. A mild breeze helped clear up the weather quickly, by 8 am, as compared to last two days.
The runway visibility (RVR) showed a slight dip during sunrise, otherwise remained good.
Fog in East India
In Gorakhpur, the visibility reduced to 500 meters on Thursday. This could be attributed to- a) minimum temperature dropping a shade below 15°C, b) proximity to the foothills, and c) presence of a lake in the vicinity of the airport. With humidity levels sustaining above 75%, fog in Gorakhpur is likely to be a regular feature now and could only worsen in days to come.
Agra witnessed a foggy morning for the second consecutive day. Visibility dropped to 800 meters under the influence of clear skies and favourable humidity levels. Air, rail and road traffic remains unaffected and no major delays have been reported yet.
November 5, 12.00 (IST): Pattern of Fog differs in Delhi
Delhi witnessed a smoggy morning but don't be afraid as dense fog in Delhi hasn't set in yet. Minimum temperatures are now around 16-17°C with humidity above 80% during early morning hours. With the present humidity and temperature profile, one will definitely be bothered by poor visibility conditions. Only an active system bringing rain in North India will set the pace for winter and dense fog.
A difference in the pattern of smog in Delhi has been noticed on Wednesday as general visibility remained above 1000 meters till 12 am, dropped to 800 meters within couple of hours and settled around 600-650 meters at the time of sunrise. While on tuesday morning, visibility had relatively improved by sunrise.
Fog in East India
Fog is somewhat making an appearance in Agra, as general visibility dropped to 800 meters on Wednesday morning. However, it does not mean that winter has set in but is definitely showing signs of commencement.
November 4, 13.30 (IST): Fog in Delhi
With just a flavour of winter chill during early morning hours in the national capital, the most feared element of winter- fog is almost making an appearance. Fog is generally a phenomenon which occurs in early morning and late evening hours. Fog in Delhi and North India is the most common feature of the winter season which leads to massive delays and cancellations of flights and trains.
Since last two days, general visibility at the Palam airport has been dropping below 1000 meters and the lowest till now was 650 meters, which comes under the category of shallow fog. Formation of fog generally demands humidity levels above 75% and minimums below 15°C. Delhi has been experiencing night temperatures around 15°C and humidity touching even 90%.
Thus, the criteria for formation of fog have been fulfilled and airport authorities are reporting fog but the typical factors are yet to be seen. Generally, rain and snow in Jammu & Kashmir is the pace setter for the commencement of winter in India. We have not experienced any winter rain yet and dryness in the air prevails as humidity levels come down in the afternoon hours.
At present, the drop in visibility could be due to smog as conditions are yet not favourable for formation of radiation or advection fog. With the drop in night temperatures in Delhi, cool air near the surface combines with dust and industrial pollution to create smog in the surface area.
Fog in East India
Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh has also been reporting fog since last few days. Nevertheless, the situation is location specific and not due to any synoptic situation. Gorakhpur could be experiencing a foggy situation due to nearby hills and a huge water body.
Lucknow, Agra, Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Fursatganj and other places in East India which are known for being affected by dense fog in winter season have been reporting clear weather.
On a concluding note, we can say that the stage has been set and North and East India are inching towards that period when air, rail and road traffic will bear the brunt of poor visibility conditions due to fog.
