June 3, 2016 11:15 AM |

mainAs predicted by Skymet Weather, fairly widespread moderate to heavy rains and thundershowers lashed several parts of Coastal Odisha on June 2.

This was also accompanied by lightning and high-velocity winds. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Chandbali recorded 22 mm of rain, Angul 19.2 mm, Bhubaneswar 18 mm, Keonjhargarh 13.7 mm, Koraput 8 mm, Gopalpur 7.9 mm, and Jharsuguda 4.1mm.

Skymet Weather predicts that the weather conditions remain conducive for the rainfall and thundershowers activities to continue during next 24-48 hours as well. Especially parts of South Coastal Odisha are expected to record good showers.

Similar weather conditions were also recorded on June 1 that had reportedly claimed 17 lives, while around 9 people were injured.

According to Skymet Weather, this is the season when the eastern parts of the country, particularly Chota Nagpur plateau including Odisha and West Bengal receive very severe thunderstorm and thunder squall activities.

During this time, huge convective clouds develops over the region which usually gives lightning and thunderstorm followed by heavy showers and very strong squally winds sometimes reaching up to 80 kmph - 90 kmph.

Such weather activities during the Pre-Monsoon season that lasts from April till the beginning of June are known as Nor’westers or in local language ‘kal-baisakhi’.
