Heavy rains likely over Andhra Pradesh as Severe Cyclone Vardah inches closerThe cyclonic storm Vardah had formed in the Southeast Bay of Bengal on December 8 during the early morning hours. Even before its intensification as a cyclone, the system has been giving heavy to very heavy rains over Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Now, the storm has moved away from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and weather conditions have improved over the region. However, now the storm is moving towards the southern parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

At present Vardah is 880 km ESE of Nellore and 830 km ESE of Machilipatnam. The system is expected to maintain its strength until the evening hours of December 11. It is expected to hit the coast between Machilipatnam and Nellore on December 12 as a cyclonic storm.

In the wake of this, rainfall is expected to commence over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh as well as Rayalaseema on December 11. Intensity of rains is expected to be light to moderate tomorrow with moderate winds.

However, on December the region is likely to receive moderate to heavy rains with isolated very heavy falls. In fact, the wind speed is also expected to increase and will gust up to 130 kmph.

Fishermen have been asked to not venture out into the sea today onward. Sea conditions will remain rough to very rough. The ones at the sea have also been asked to return back.
