Kedarnath yatra stalled, more rain likely next week

June 26, 2015 12:42 PM |

Kedarnath Yatra WeatherUnremitting rain has led to the postponement of Kedarnath yatra due to fears of landslips in the region. As of now, the yatra to the famous Kedarnath shrine has been suspended till Saturday. Officials are in no mood to take a risk until the weather clears up.

As many as 500 pilgrims were left stranded at Gaurikund on Thursday night. A bridge for motor vehicles at Sonprayag was washed away by floods and damage was reported at four makeshift bridges. Even the yatra to Badrinath was blocked due to a landslip in Chamoli district.

But brief respite for the region and the visiting pilgrims is on the way. The region is expected to witness light rainfall activity today. The Western Disturbance which is currently over eastern parts of Jammu and Kashmir can now be seen moving away in the north-eastward direction. Isolated rainfall activity is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

But the intensity of rain over the region will reduce significantly over the next 2 to 3 days. In fact, sunny weather conditions (with partly cloudy skies) are likely for the next 48 to 72 hours. However, around June 29, another Western Disturbance will start giving rain over the region. Moderate rainfall activity is expected initially which may become heavy by July 1. The tentative plan to resume the yatra from June 28 is likely to meet a weather blockade by June end and especially during the first week of July.
