This incident unfortunately happens to be the highest number of deaths in any state in 24 hours due to lightning strikes. Deaths have been reported in cities from across the state including Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Sambalpur, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar and Kendrapara.

The lightning strike death record has been massive in Odisha as between April 1 and June 23, 155 people have been reported dead. Yesterday’s figures have only added to the miseries of the people residing in the state.

Good rains have been recorded over Odisha during the last 24 hours with Chandbali recording a good 69 mm of rain. Other areas to have received rains during the last 24 hours from  8:30 am on Saturday include Bhubaneswar 21 mm, Puri 15 mm, Keonjhargarh 7 mm and Sambalpur 4 mm.

These rains can be attributed to the increase in moisture incursion at higher levels due to the fresh upper air cyclonic circulation which has developed over east-central Bay of Bengal. This Monsoon system shows signs of further intensification into a low pressure area during the next 48 hours.

During the next 24 to 48 hours, on and off rains is expected to continue over the state. However, around August 3 when the Monsoon system will intensify, rains will pick up pace once again over the state of Odisha. Therefore, residents of the state are advised to stay alert at all times and be at safer areas when a lightning strikes the area.
