Monsoon shifts to top gear

June 26, 2016 11:06 AM |

Monsoon in IndiaPutting all the speculations to rest, the Southwest Monsoon has finally picked up pace. Vigorous Monsoon conditions are already being observed along the West Coast and parts of Northeast India.

The rainfall deficiency that had once peaked at 25% on June 17, now stands at 16% as on June 25. With substantial increase in Monsoon rains, we expect this deficiency to come down to single digit by the end of this month.

All thanks to the two cyclonic circulations that had developed in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The one in the Arabian Sea has moved in the northwest direction, extending the off-shore trough along the West Coast till Coastal Gujarat. This trough will now be responsible for pounding rains over Coastal Karnataka, North Kerala, Goa and especially over Coastal Maharashtra, which will see torrential showers in coming days.

Mumbai will also see some heavy to very heavy showers now onward. The city which was once seen crawling towards its daunting monthly average of 523 mm, now stands at 403 mm of rain. Withfavorablee weather conditions and five days in hand, the city is likely to exceed its monthly mean.

The weather system in Bay of Bengal, off coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, is now likely to move inland soon. It will move towards Maharashtra and will also bring down the east-west trough running along the Indo-Gangetic plains.

All these features have resulted in ideal conditions for speeding up the advancement of Southwest Monsoon into the leftover parts of the country.

Till now, we had seen the eastern arm and the western arm of the Monsoon progressing one by one. But now onwards, both the branches of the Monsoon are likely to move together and cover rest of the country.

Hence despite the delay in onset, Monsoon is likely to cover the last post of West Rajasthan well before its scheduled date of July 15.
