No magical Monsoon likely this year, excess rains a distant dream

No magical Monsoon likely this year, excess rains a distant dreamThe cat is out of the bag, the Monsoon 2017 forecast is finally here. While we may have hoped for an excess rainfall surprise this year, rain gods are still not as happy as they should be. The Monsoon forecast 2017 says 95 percent rains which means it happens to be a notch even below the normal rainfall category.

This is the fourth consecutive year when Monsoon rains are not likely to surpass the above normal rains mark. The figures say it all, this year too, rainfall distribution and spread may not be as much as it should be.

We’ve been waiting for year 2013 to repeat itself but it seems like nobody’s listening. Both the years 2014 and 2015 were massive drought years. Areas in Maharashtra had been observing drought conditions since so long. El-Nino was the real culprit for drought years of 2014 and 2015.

Then came the year 2016 when hopes for good rains had once again risen. However, by the end of September it was quite clear that there is nothing to rejoice. While rains were normal, the rainfall distribution spoke a different story.

The agricultural belts continued to witness less rains and crops did suffer. Major areas received very little rains resulting in almost drought like conditions. While central parts of the country did observe rains, these rains were in excess resulting in crop damage over the area.

Now, Monsoon 2017 is expected to be below normal with rains likely to be at 95 percent. Thus, this year too, the excess rainfall dream seems to be far-fetched dream. For the past three years since 2014, rain gods have been quite unkind. This year too, unfortunately, Monsoon may not be able to display its excess rain magic.
