May 25, 2016 1:18 PM |

Rain in Northeast IndiaA cyclonic circulation is prevailing over North Bay of Bengal for the last few days. This system has been oscillating between Gangetic West Bengal and North Bay of Bengal, leading to moisture incursion over entire Northeast India. A trough is also extending from East Uttar Pradesh to this system across North Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and dipping southwards to the weather system in North Bay.

All the above-mentioned weather systems will continue to give fairly widespread rain and thundershowers over Northeast India. Some parts of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh could witness heavy to very heavy rain fall activities also during next 2 to 3 days.

In fact, these rains will continue throughout rest of the month. On May 28 and 29, one or two areas of Meghalaya and Tripura may receive very heavy thundershowers leading flood like situation, triggering landslides.

Here’s a look at the rainfall figures in Northeast India during last 24 hours:

Rain in Northeast India

This year, after a gap of about 2 to 3 years, Northeast India is living up to its reputation of the rainiest region in India. At a time when most parts of India were witnessing heatwave conditions in the absence of pre-Monsoon showers in April, Northeast India received continuous rains. The cumulative rainfall deficiency in April was just 19% for the country even though 27 subdivisions of the country received scanty or deficit rains while 4 subdivisions receive no rain at all. Thus, we can say that the major rainfall contribution in April came from northeastern states.
