November rains exceed seasonal rainfall in Peninsular India

November 24, 2015 1:58 PM |

Chennai rainsRainfall in November has been very good for all the Northeast Monsoon sub-divisions of Peninsular India. It has in fact covered the deficit left by October. According to the rainfall data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, many places in the region have already exceeded the seasonal rainfall.

For instance, Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu in the month of November so far has received a whopping 1143 mm of rain against the seasonal (October, November and December) average of 877. This is an all-time high record for the city. Another city in Tamil Nadu which has received very good rains is Nagapattinam. The city in the month of November so far has received 944 mm which is almost equal to the seasonal average of 954 mm.

Nellore in Andhra Pradesh also observed some very good weather this month due to which the city recorded 745 mm of rain against the seasonal average of 685. Bangalore is yet another city in Peninsular India to have recorded 290 mm of rain, which is higher than the seasonal rainfall of 226 mm.

Interestingly there hasn’t been any cyclone this time to give good rains but low pressure areas and cyclonic circulation have been the major factors for such heavy rains in the region.

And with more than a month left for the active Northeast Monsoon season, chances of surplus rains during this season are very high, as predicted by Skymet earlier.
