Updated on March 31, 2016 04:40 PM (IST): Odisha and West Bengal get pre-Monsoon rain, more in offing for East India

Pre-Monsoon showers have started making their appearance over parts of East India. Odisha, West Bengal and isolated parts of Chhattisgarh have witnessed scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers during last 24 hours.

Isolated places of the state have also recorded strong winds accompanied with hail storms.

According to Skymet Weather, rain and thundershowers will continue for at least another three days. The rain belt may cover more parts of adjoining states of Bihar and Jharkhand also.

This pocket is also prone to such weather activities during pre-Monsoon season.

Following are the rainfall figures recorded across the region in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday.

Table--Rain in East India

East India starts witnessing pre-Monsoon activities as soon as we enter mid-March. By this time, we also see an anti-cyclonic circulation in Bay of Bengal. This system is a semi-permanent feature during this season that keeps oscillating close and far from the East Coast.

Presence of this system often leads to development of a confluence zone or a trough anywhere over West Bengal up to Andhra Pradesh.

At present, a cyclonic circulation is marked over Bangladesh and West Bengal. A trough is extending from this system up to North Coastal Andhra Pradesh across Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The ongoing activity can be attributed to these systems.

As we enter April, these pre-Monsoon showers will become more frequent and violent in terms of hailstorm and very strong winds. According to Skymet Weather, mercury starts soaring with the beginning of April, which leads of increase in intensity of the weather activity.

However, these showers will not be able to bring relief from high day temperatures. The rain activity occurs mostly in late afternoon or evening hours and by then, temperatures already reach their peak.

Weather over West Bengal and Odisha will continue to be hot and humid, however, evening will be better.
