November 16, 2016 2:43 PM |

Rain in Tamil Nadu

Usually, the commencement of Northeast Monsoon in South Peninsula is around October which continues up to the month of December. However, this year Northeast Monsoon has begun late and reached around October 30.

Currently, the Northeast Monsoon is weak which is why most of South Peninsular states witnessed dry weather with little or no rain so much so that it led to drought conditions in the areas.

In the last 24 hours, the coastal belt of Tamil Nadu including Chennai and interior parts of Karnataka have received scattered light to moderate with isolated heavy rains. Also, light rains have occurred in parts of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Belgaum recorded 29 mm of rainfall, Chennai 18 mm, Nagapattinam 6 mm, Thoothukadi 8 mm, Pamban 3 mm, Palayamkottai 5 mm and Agumbe 3 mm of rainfall.

Now, a trough is extending from South Goa up to Lakshadweep Islands. Also, a cyclonic circulation is seen over North Kerala Coast.

Moreover, a north-south trough is seen near to South Tamil Nadu Coast, and another cyclonic circulation is marked over south-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Indian Ocean.

As per Skymet Weather, subdued rains are expected to continue for next 3-4 days over many parts of South Peninsular India. However, interior parts of Tamil Nadu will see scattered light rain and isolated heavy showers along the foothills of Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, scattered showers are likely over coastal and southern parts of Karnataka. Kerala may also receive rain at few places, while rain may intensify over Lakshadweep Islands.
