December 20, 2016 12:57 PM |

Chennai weather. With the formation of low pressure area in Southwest Bay of Bengal, weathermen had predicted another spell of rains in Chennai. However, the weather system was not able to gather much strength and weakened in the sea itself.

According to Skymet Weather, the system has now become insignificant and is presently seen as a cyclonic circulation near Sri Lanka Coast.

With this, Chennai is likely to witness mainly dry weather with partly cloudy sky conditions. Further, we do not expect any significant weather system approaching that could affect the weather over the city.

Weathermen predict that Chennai will remain dry during the rest of December.

Though a fresh cyclonic circulation is developing over Southeast Bay of Bengal but it is likely to move in west-southwest direction towards South Tamil Nadu. The system may give some scattered showers but they will be confined to southern parts of the state only.

December started on a rainy note for the state capital, with two back to back cyclones, Nada and Vardah. Both of them had given heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the city.

In wake of this, city had already surpassed its monthly average rainfall of 119 mm in the first half of the month. So far, the city has recorded 329 mm of rain.

This year, Chennai has been highly rain deficit on account of the subdued Northeast Monsoon. In fact, November which is supposed to be rainiest month for the city, recorded mere 50 mm in comparision to monthly mean of 407 mm.
