Published on March 22, 2016: India Weather: Record Heat in South India, mercury goes beyond 40°C

It is the glimpse of early summer for people of Hyderabad, Vijaywada, Tirupati and parts of Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as the mercury shoots to new heights. Several regions are reeling under severe heat wave like conditions, even before summer stepped its foot into India.

The southern most part of India are struggling with the discomfort of unbearable hot weather.

The unusual heat wave has been stealthily sweeping across the region since February when maximum or day temperature in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala was settling 5-6 degrees above than the normal.

Moreover, the temperatures refuse to crawl back to normal and keep on showing an increasing trend. The following table shows the maximum temperature across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in last 24 hours.

Tirupati is witnessing heat wave as maximum temperature is settling 5 degrees above than the normal. This is the highest maximum for Tirupati in last ten years. The current maximum for Kurnool is also record breaking for the city in last years. According to Skymet, the absence of any significant weather activity is causing the severe heat across Peninsular India.

Moreover, the cool northerly winds that penetrate upto Marathwada, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh during this time have also failed to provide sufficient relief to the residents. The repetitive occurrence of Western Disturbance and induced cyclonic circulations majorly obstructed this flow of winds.

2016 has already begun on a sizzling note with January and February smashing heat records. 2015 turned out to be one the hottest years globally and for India as well as a deadly heatwave in May claimed almost 2500 lives in the country.

According to climate experts, things aren’t getting better but much worse. In absence of any weather activity, temperatures are expected to rise significantly in April, turning out to be woeful in summer as these states are already staring at a water crisis.
