Rain in Kerala backwatersPerformance of Southwest Monsoon 2015 has been under speculations ever since its beginning. Firstly, it was its delayed onset and then Cyclone Ashobaa in the Arabian Sea. But after two weeks, Monsoon is advancing rapidly defying all odds.

Till June 15, India received rainfall which was in excess by 13 per cent with around 77 per cent of the country having normal or surplus rainfall, reports Skymet Meteorology Division in India. Moreover, weather conditions remain favourable for its further advancement.

Monsoon had made onset over India on June 5, slightly later than its official date of June 1. But within two days of striking the country, it had reached its normal average rains. Subsequently, first week ended on a good note. As on June 7, country had recorded 24 mm of rain against the normal of 23.9 mm.

Beginning of second week saw cyclone Ashobaa in the Arabian Sea taking away all the moisture, leading to reduction in intensity of rain. But Monsoon picked up the pace once again and at the end of the second week, country recorded 69.6 mm of rain against the average of 61.4 mm for first 15 days of June.
