Thiruvananthapuram receives record pre-Monsoon rain

Rain in ThiruvananthapuramWith pre-Monsoon activity peaking in the last few days, Thiruvananthapuram has been witnessing record rain. The city has received 296 mm of rain so far, surpassing the highest rainfall figure - 245.8 mm, observed in 2014 - recorded in last ten years.

With this, the city has also exceeded the monthly average rainfall of 198.6 mm. On Saturday, Thiruvananthapuram had received 98 mm of rain, followed by 97 mm of rain on Sunday.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, moderate to heavy rain will continue to lash the city for next 24 to 48 hours.

A cyclonic circulation is prevailing over Lakshadweep and adjoining Kerala region, which is giving rain over southern peninsula.

As per the forecast by Skymet, the weather conditions are favourable for the early onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala. It has already arrived over Andaman and Nicobar Islands well before time and will shortly reach Sri Lanka, thereafter hitting Kerala.

The official date or onset of Monsoon in Kerala is June 1 but this year Skymet predicts it to arrive somewhere between May 27 and May 29.
