The much awaited Monsoon has come to Delhi bringing respite from the scorching heat. But come Monsoon and madness follows closely. The adversities associated with Monsoon in Delhi such as traffic snarls, waterlogging and choked drains do not take long to make their appearance felt in daily life of Delhi rains. Some of the other common problems that Delhiites are left to stare at during Monsoon are:
Monsoon diseases/Allergies
Incessant rain and increased humidity provide an ideal environment for growth and spread of disease-causing viruses and bacteria. Cases of dengue and malaria reach all time high during the Monsoon period in Delhi. Stagnated water in puddles near houses is one of the major cause of water-borne diseases during Monsoon. The rainy season is also a season of allergies. Wet clothes and moist weather often lead to conjunctivitis, rashes and itching during Monsoon.
Water logging
Whether Monsoon stays weak, normal or strong but the problem of water-logging in Delhi is perennial. For Delhiites, not a single day passes by, without dreading a commute through the infamous Moolchand underpass and many others in the city especially during monsoon season, as the water starts logging in the underpasses.
Traffic jams
If there is water logging, traffic jams can’t be far behind. People stuck in traffic snarls or traffic that moves at a snail’s pace is a common sight when Delhi observes a rainy morning. Commuters livid with rage, urged to move ahead of other commuters and exhibiting an indifferent attitude towards fellow pedestrians are common for Delhi rains.
Problem in Metro
People rushing towards the metro stations and pushing each other to get inside the metro train in order to shield themselves from the Monsoon rain is another common problem in Delhi during Monsoon. And even though the view of outside from inside is breathtaking, passengers inside the metro train are in for a difficult time and many other problems.
Soaring vegetables prices
Every year during Monsoon vegetables get stupendously expensive, especially the king and queen of Indian Kitchen- onions and tomatoes. Besides bringing tears to your eyes, onions also burn a hole in the pockets of the common man. Rains that delay the transit of important vegetables and fruits from one place to another not just hit their timely supply but leads to an increase of 20 -30%.
