March usually witnesses increased rain activities as the cyclonic circulations and low-pressure areas start forming over Southwest Bay of Bengal and Comorin area during this time of the year. Successive months of April and May will also witness increasing intensity and frequency of thundershower activities.

During last two days, Sri Lanka has been receiving moderate to heavy rains. The main reason for these rains is the formation of a well-marked low-pressure area over south of Sri Lanka.

During the next 24 hours, we expect moderate to heavy rains with one or two extremely heavy spells over Sri Lanka.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Batticaloa recorded 25.8 mm of rain followed by Nuwara Eliya 22.5 mm, Anuradhapura 20.5 mm, Ratmalana 16.2 mm, Trincomalee 6.7 mm, Pottuvil 6.5 mm, Kandy 5.1 mm, Galle 3.5 mm, Hambantota 3.8 mm, Vavuniya 3.2 mm, Puttalam 5.4 mm, Kurunegala 5.6 mm and rest many places recorded traces of rain.

Thereafter, as the weather systems will move away from Sri Lanka towards northwest, rain intensity will decrease. However, scattered light rains are expected to continue. Squally winds in order of 50- 60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph are expected to continue over coastal areas for next 48 hours.

Fishermen are advised to not venture into the sea for the next 2 days, as the sea conditions will be rough to very rough.
