According to a recent report released by UNICEF, climate change puts the lives of around 690 million children at risk. Climate change has been in the limelight for melting ice sheets and moving mountains. However, the new report named “Unless we act now” has shed light on the risk that climate change poses to millions of children worldwide.
Most areas, which are exposed to climate change have been bearing the brunt of global warming. The death, and poverty rates in these regions are much higher when compared to other parts of the globe less affected by climate change.
Africa has been severely affected by massive droughts where around 160 million children reside. Additionally, tropical storms and floods are affecting the lives of another 530 million children, mostly in Asia.
As per the report, it will be children who will be severely affected by the adverse effects of Climate Change. Presently, children are already being impacted. The number of children who have been exposed to the ill effects of climate change is itself quite unnerving.
Adding to the number, a policy specialist at UNICEF who is also the author of the report has said that the effects of a drought or a flood on a rich child and on a poor one are strikingly different. Existing inequalities make climate change even more unacceptable.
