Google’s most talked about research and development project, Project Loon, is almost ready for a full roll-out. Project Loon is Google’s most ambitious project till date. The project aims at providing internet access to rural and remote areas across the world.
Project Loon involves the use of high-altitude balloons which float at an altitude of 32 km from the ground. These balloons would then create an aerial wireless network. This network will be able to provide 3G like speeds over a particular region.
Users on the ground will be able to connect to the internet using a special antenna. The project dates back to 2011 but was officially announced on June 14, 2013. Project Loon has numerous uses and can be crucial in providing fast and reliable communication in the event of a natural disaster.
Google is currently optimizing the project for full-scale use. Initial trials have shown that the project can be a success. Recently, it was revealed that balloons were able to stay in the sky for as long as six months. Project Loon, along with other projects which aim at providing aerial wireless network, is surely going to revolutionize the way internet services reach the humble consumer.
