28 die, dozens missing as deadly landslides, floods affect Sri Lanka

Updated on May 28, 2017: Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc over the Sri Lankan nation. Mudslides and landslides along with flooding in these regions. In fact, the death toll continue to increase. Now, 146 people are reportedly killed with 112 people still missing.

More rains are likely over the nation during the next 24 hours. At least 100,000 people have been displaced as torrential rains continued to lash the island nation.

Relief and rescue aids have been promised by several countries including the United States and Pakistan. Meanwhile, India has already sent a shipload of goods.

Published on May 26, 2017: Inclement weather has been wreaking havoc over Sri Lanka. So much so that at least 28 have been killed, as per reports by Al Jazeera. Not only this, as per reports, at least 66 people remain missing. As per the Disaster Management Center of Sri Lanka, the calamity has affected at least 24,000 people. Heavy rainfall also triggered massive landslides.

Roads have been waterlogged, flooded and schools have been closed in many parts of the country.

These landslides occurred in the night hours of Thursday night and early morning hours of Friday. The country had been witnessing heavy rains for the past two to three days.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Ratnapura witnessed a whopping 348.5 mm of rainfall. Other areas also witnessed heavy rains including Hambantota 74 mm, Galle 64.5 mm, and Nuwara Eliya 35.5 mm.

After the landslide in Bulathsinhala which lies at least 65km southeast of the capital, Colombo, elevem bodies were recovered from the area.

Popular tourist destinations including Galle and Matara also witnessed heavy rains. Reports of mudslides in the Kalutara district, south of Colombo also came up via local media. Due to this, houses and were shops were buried.

Several important roads also suffered a beating along with hindrance in rescue boat operations.
