A cold front that developed over Russia is now expected to sweep across Germany amid this week. This would be the longest stretch of cold weather so far this winter. The hardest hit area will be southern parts of Germany as locations from Munich to Stuttgart will be colder than Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg.
Day temperatures are expected to reach around -7°C in Munich by Wednesday and Thursday. The average high of this area is around 2°C during mid-January.
Night temperatures will drop ranging between -18°C and -12°C across parts of Bavaria, Thuringia and Saxony by Wednesday night. Similar temperatures are expected on Thursday night as well.
The high-pressure area will pull the harsh cold air into Germany. This strong system will also obstruct any storm systems from reaching the region. Hence, snowfall will remain abated this week.
No significant rain and snow is expected, however low clouds and fog will hover across northern parts of Germany.
With freezing temperatures, dense fog may result in ice buildup on roads, making it slippery and thus creating dangerous travel conditions.
Also, rail and air traffic will be affected due to prolonged periods of poor visibility and dense fog. Locations most at risk for travel delays include Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg and Bremen.
The threat for freezing fog is likely to continue across Germany into this weekend as the cold front will persist across the country.
