Cyclone in Australia during this time of the year is pretty common. But this time around the season remained largely inactive off Australia's north. But the quant sea views of the Northern Territory have finally been disturbed by a major storm. Tropical Cyclone Blanche has bought heavy rain and strong winds to the Top End around Darwin.
Even ranked as a category-1 storm, this Cyclone Blanche is likely to strengthen into a category-2 cyclone by today afternoon. Cyclone Blanche is set to make landfall on the north Kimberley coast east of Kalumburu.
During the course of this season, no cyclone made landfall on Australia’s mainland. If Cyclone Blanche crosses the coast as expected, it will be the latest on record for the first landfall on the continent during a season.
On Sunday the Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning stating, “Cyclone Blanche brought winds at the speed of 75kmph with wind gusting up to 100kmph." The cyclone is travelling southwest parallel to the coast has brought hefty sum of rains along with strong winds to Darwin on Sunday.
Usually the mainland Australia typically records 11 cyclones in one particular season. But in the summer of 2016, only three such named storms made an appearance.
Another cyclone named Enawo is hovering over the Indian Ocean near the island of Madagascar. Tropical Cyclone Enawo is expected to make the landfall over the coast on Tuesday evening. The winds are expected to reach up to 160kmph.
