A record hurricane drought is being witnessed over the United States. In the last seven years, the US has only witnessed four hurricane strikes. This is a record stretch and such few hurricanes haven’t occurred since records began.
The most hurricane strikes award goes to the years between 2002 and 2008 when the United States was hit by 18 hurricanes making it the most hurricane active years ever. During the past seven years, the four hurricanes that the United States has been hit by include Irene in the year 2011, in the eyar 2012 it was hurricane Isaac and Hurricane Sandy and hurricane Arthur in the year 2014.
Also, in technical terms, Sandy was a post tropical cyclone at the time of landfall. Not only this, but in 11 years, United States also has not been hit by a major hurricane ranging between Category 3 and 5.
The last time a string hurricane was witnessed in the country was Hurricane Wilma which had wreaked havoc over Florida claiming 35 lives on October 24, 2005.
As per meteorologists, during the past ten years, a trough has been set up over the East Coast of the US between August and October which are also the months of hurricane strikes. Due to this, storms are being steered out to the sea, away from the coast.
