If you thought you knew all about continents and took your Geography lessons seriously, prepared to be surprised. All that continent knowledge may have gone to be a waste. Just about a few days ago, scientists have actually found a lost continent beneath the Indian under Mauritius.
The history of how Mauritius was formed is in itself quite an interesting story. The island was formed from lave which was spewed by volcanoes during a period of nine million years. A three billion years old piece of crust has been discovered by scientists in the Indian Ocean.
The crust found under the Mauritian Island may have been a part of the ancient super continent of Gondwana. The supercontinent Gondwana used to exist at least 200 million years ago. Before splitting off, Australia, India, South America, Africa, as well as Antarctica were a part of this super continent.
As per scientists, this crust may even be a part of an undiscovered microcontinent called Mauritia which broke off 60 million years ago, when Madagascar and India had separated.
