Snow blizzard shuts Air traffic, schools in Northeast US

Northeast United States of America is experiencing one of the worst winter storms, named Stella, and in the recent past as continuous snow is falling over the region. A strong blizzard piled up few inches of snow over the region on Tuesday. Civic authorities across multiple states in Northeast have advised residents to stay at home, airlines have cancelled flights and schools remain shut.

National Weather Service of United States has issued a warning for about 50 million people from states across Pennsylvania to Maine. Such weather is unusual for the region so late in the winter but this severe winter storm Stella is expected to drop around 2 feet of snow by early Wednesday.

With such extreme weather in place, governors in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia declared states of emergency. Blizzard warning was issued for the Big Apple but as the weather eased out over the region, warning was replaced by ‘winter weather advisory’ only.

But easing of weather over New York City will be understating the weather conditions over the region. It is snowing as of now which is expected to continue till tomorrow. So far NYC has received snowfall of 4-8 inches.

City life has been disrupted with many New Yorkers already planning to stay home but most of Newyorkers have gone ahead with their daily work. Such is the spirit of hard working New Yorkers.

Having said that Air traffic across the region was affected very badly with more than 5500 flights being canceled going in and out of the region. Newark in New Jersey, LaGuardia in New York and Boston Logan International Airport were the ones with most cancellations.

American Airlines cancelled all flights into all New York's airports even JetBlue Airways reported extensive cancellations. Delta Air Lines canceled 800 flights for Tuesday for New York and Boston among other areas.

With air traffic affected the largest US school system the New York City public schools canceled their classes on Tuesday. Similar was the scenario with the schools of Washington, D.C., area, Boston, Philadelphia and northern New Jersey.

Along with snowfall Coastal flood warnings were issued for several parts of the region as a storm rush is expected to go high during high tide on Tuesday. German Chancellor Angela Merkel who was supposed to meet the US President Donald Trump in Washington has postponed her trip until Friday.
