Snow threatens to cause travel disruptions across the southern parts of Germany late this week, before a fresh blast of cold air hits during the weekend.
A combination of cold air and a storm system is approaching from the North Sea. This will allow snow to cover much of the country on Friday.
People in northcentral and northeast Germany, including Hamburg and Berlin, will be waking up to light snowfall of up to an inch on Friday morning. This coating of snow could result in slippery condition and people in the area should exercise caution.
Some snowfall could occur in Dusseldorf and Cologne on Friday. But, snow accumulation would be mainly over grassy and elevated surfaces. In Frankfurt, around an inch of slushy snowfall will occur, making road conditions slippery. Higher amounts of snowfall will occur over central and southern Germany.
Widespread snowfall of up to six inches is expected across southwestern Germany and the Bohemian Forest including Stuttgart on Friday night. Road and air travel delays can be expected over this region.
Following this storm, sub-zero temperatures will grip the entire country. Thus, any wet surface will turn icy. This will also make road travel and walking more hazardous. During the weekend, the temperatures will be up to 4°C below normal across the region.
On Saturday, rain and snow showers will be affecting much of Germany and on Sunday, the weather activity will be mainly confined to the southern parts.
