Storm in the Caribbean Sea to end Atlantic tropical drought soon

August 1, 2016 4:32 PM |

Storm-is-Brewing-Over-the-Caribbean-Sea 2A tropical storm is likely to move across the Caribbean Sea this week, increasing the potential for the Atlantic Basin to become active once again.

The eastern Pacific Ocean has been quite active over the last many days but the Atlantic Basin has not witnessed any storm system since Tropical Storm Danielle made landfall just north of Tuxpan in Mexico, on June 20, 2016.

Over the past couple of months, feeble weather systems have been moving westward from Africa. Dry and dusty winds from the Sahara Desert have been blowing over much of the Atlantic during the months of June and July. Now, a tropical wave is likely to end the tropical drought in the Atlantic Basin.

The tropical wave is expected to come racing from the Leeward Islands and south of the Greater Antilles during the first half of this week. It will reach the western Caribbean Sea by midweek. At present the wave is moving westward at a speed of about 32 to 40 kmph.

Conditions will become favorable for the tropical wave to organize into a tropical depression or storm by midweek. The probable tropical storm to develop next will be named ‘Earl’.

This weather system will bring heavy rain and thunderstorms across the Caribbean Sea this week.
