Thick fog continues to disrupt travel across Germany

Fog in Germany

Germany has been witnessing dense fog with visibility almost dropping to nil. The freezing fog and poor visibility have caused travel disruptions across the country for almost a week.

As per forecasters, no relief is in sight at least till Thursday. These weather conditions are expected to remain the same for next several days as well. During this time frame, temperatures are expected to drop below zero degrees Celsius, resulting in layer of ice on untreated surfaces causing slippery sidewalks and slower travel.

Most parts of the country will have to witness at least several hours of poor visibility through Wednesday. Beside this, fog will persist both day and night in many locations through the middle of the week.

The icy air is likely to remain confined to southern parts of Germany including Munich, Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Dresden. With this, maximum temperatures will fail to reach zero degree-mark during Wednesday. Also, these areas are under the greatest threat for prolonged freezing fog and icy spots.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rise above zero degrees during afternoon hours in Berlin, Frankfurt and Hamburg. However, it will drop back below freezing, increasing the risk for icy spots.

Regular delays to road, rail and air travel are likely all over the country. The worst air quality is also anticipated across the northwest parts this week.

Increase in wind speed from the south during the later part of the week will abate dense fog conditions and hence will limit the threat for travel disruption.

These winds from south direction will gradually pull milder air all through the country, with most areas witnessing above normal temperatures by this weekend.
