Sri Lanka has been receiving good rains for the past few days. So much so that the country recorded heavy rainfall on Saturday. Now, as the weather system in close proximity underwent intensification, heavy to extremely heavy rains have lashed many areas of Sri Lanka.
During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Katunayake recorded a whopping 262 mm of rain followed by Vavuniya where 202.5 mm rainfall was received. Other areas to have received rain include Trincomalee 183 mm, Jaffna 179 mm, Kurunegala 156.4 mm, Batticaloa 145 mm, Ratnapura 136 mm, Puttalam 117.4 mm, Anuradhapura 111 mm, and Galle 98 mm rainfall. Heavy rain has also been recorded over several other areas.
The low-pressure area which was over Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked low yesterday. Now, conditions are favourable for the system to further intensify into a depression anytime soon. Thus, more rains are expected to lash Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours.
In fact, the country could see some record breaking rains as well. However, after 24 hours, the system is likely to cross the Tamil Nadu coast. Thus, some relief from the torrential rains can be expected after the shift of the weather system.
