Violent Storm Niklas kills Nine in Central EuropeA powerful storm across Central and Northern Europe caused widespread destruction across parts of the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. The storm has been nicknamed as ‘Niklas’ and is one of the most powerful storms to hit Germany in 7 years. At least nine people were killed including 7 in Germany where the storm further strengthened into a hurricane accompanied by winds of more than 190km/hr.

Before reaching Germany yesterday, the violent storm spread across Poland, Scotland and eastern and northern France. Bad weather caused disruption in road and rail traffic. Tens and thousands of households were left without electricity.

A 75-year-old motorist was crushed by a tree in Switzerland due to the storm Niklas. Also, a 63-year-old man was killed in the eastern German town of Gross Santersleben, after a concrete wall damaged by the storm fell on him. Also, a nine-year-old girl was severely injured after a tree fell on her due to the violent storm Niklas. The storm has also affected aerial transportation after Frankfurt Airport made an announcement regarding the cancellation of a large number of scheduled flights for Tuesday and Wednesday due to the storm.
