Tropical storm Nora has now moved into the central Pacific region and is located around 1400 km east-southeast of Hawaii, adding to the record-breaking storm season for the region. This year, 13 such storms have made its presence felt in the region.
Nora is likely to strengthen into a hurricane by the weekend. As and when the system intensifies it could send swells to Hawaii.
Ever since records have been maintained in the late 1960’s, this year has broken the all-time record. The previous record of 11 storms was set in the years 1992 and 1994. This number includes the storms that have either formed in the central pacific or tracked westwards from eastern Pacific. Central Pacific is not an active region for storms with only four to five storms develop on an average annually, as compared to the eastern Pacific where around 15 storms develop in a year.
However, the tropical activity is expected to reduce later this month. This is because by late October the conditions become more hostile for these systems to develop and sustain over the central Pacific.
