Green Tea: How much is too much

Green tea has proven to be a much-loved elixir for weight watchers. The endless benefits of this green delight have attracted several followers. Many have even replaced the more popular drink, coffee, with green tea. While this miraculous beverage has found the top spot in many kitchen drawers, consuming too much of green tea may not be a great idea.

Green tea is packed with antioxidants which are known as catechins. Right from prevention of cancer and weight loss, to improved memory, green tea is a wholesome beverage in every way. Drinking green tea on an empty stomach speeds up weight loss. Moreover, the leftover tea bags work wonders for your skin, and help in reducing the puffiness under your eyes.

However, as wonderful as green tea may sound; over-consumption should always be avoided. An overdose of herbs in your body can prohibit your liver from doing its job correctly. This further leads to several kinds of infections. Women who are expecting should also be careful about this. They should either stop drinking green tea altogether, or limit themselves to one cup per day.

Despite the above mentioned drawbacks of over-consumption, Green tea is still way better than coffee. While green tea contains about 25 to 50 mg caffeine per cup, a cup of steaming hot coffee packs about 95 to 200 mg of caffeine.  Simply speaking, when it comes to caffeine intake, four cups of green tea equal one cup of coffee. The idea is not to drink green tea throughout the day, like water.

Did You Know? White tea may be the new green tea

It is wise to limit your green tea intake to around three to four cups a day. This way, you are not taking in too much caffeine, and are also reaping the many benefits this wonderful tea has to offer.

The goodness of green tea easily outweighs the risks associated with it. So, as long as you are not gulping down a cup every hour, you are good to go.
