Mangaluru floods post

Heavy to very heavy rains lashed the coastal districts of Karnataka yesterday that uprooted many trees and caused flash floods. These showers were so intense that it resulted in the inundation of Mangaluru and Udupi. With this, the normal life was severely affected. In fact, school and colleges are expected to remain shut for now.

These rains can be attributed to the well-marked low pressure area that was over Arabian sea off North Kerala and Karnataka Coast. This weather system has now weakened into a low pressure area and we expect further waning of the system.

So, light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue during the next 24 hours and the weather will start improving after 24 hours as then the rain intensity will reduce.

In the wake of these floods, many casualties were reported and rescue operations are still underway. Karnataka government's State Emergency Operation Centre, Revenue Department (Disaster Management) have instructed all telecom and mobile service providers to maintain optimum connectivity in Mangaluru and Udupi. Quick response team has been formed by mobile service providers to restore connectivity immediately in the case of disruption.

PM Narendra Modi spoke to the officials and asked them to ensure all possible assistance in the affected areas in Karnataka.

Bollywood celebrities like Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Pooja Hegde and Suniel Shetty took to Twitter over the news of floods in parts of Karnataka

As per Skymet Weather, Southwest Monsoon had hit Kerala before its scheduled arrival. In fact, the conditions seem favorable for further advancement of Monsoon into some parts of Central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, parts of coastal and South Interior Karnataka, parts of east-central and Northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeastern states during the next 48 hours.
