As per the latest tracked developments, the ‘Very Severe’ Cyclone ‘Maha’ has weakened into a ‘Severe’ Cyclone. At 5:30 IST today on November 6, it was near 19.8 N and 66.3 E about 600 km South of Ranchi and about 400 km West-southwest of Porbandar, and 490 km West-southwest of Veraval.
At present, the sea surface temperatures are prevailing around 27°C and Vertical Winds Shear has increased to 25 to 30 knots. The Severe Cyclone is expected to weaken further into a Cyclonic Strom soon. Dry air from West is also entering the storm which will further erode the system.
Therefore, there are good chances that the Cylone Maha will fizzle out before reaching the coast. It may reach the coast as a Well Marked Low Pressure Area or a Low-Pressure Area.
Thus, the threat of Cyclone has decreased from Gujarat to a large extent. However, sea conditions are expected to remain rough to very rough. Also, the wind speed will now gradually increase as the system will near the South Gujarat coast by tomorrow noon. The wind speed will be around 40-50 km gusting to 60-70 km per hour.
Fishermen are advised to stay away from deep sea and total suspension of fishing activities is advised until evening of November 7. Storm surge may be 3 feet above the astronomical time. The storm surge may inundate low lying areas of Bhavnagar, Junagarh, Gir, Somnath, Amreli, Surat, and Baroch. There are chances of partial damage to communication lines, breaking of tree branches, and also damage to coastal crops.
