As per HolidayIQ, this northeast capital city of Meghalaya is the best hill station in the country as of now. And no matter how much you try to counter this poll result, you have to agree to the fact that Shillong is indeed the best hill station in the country right now.

Referred as the ‘Scotland of East’ and ‘The abode of clouds’ this capital/hill station is situated in the beautiful state of Meghalaya in the hills of Khasi and Jainta.

This beautiful gem of a place sits at a near perfect height of 1500 meters from the sea level with hills not going up than 1900 meters.

The climate of this beautiful paradise is referred as subtropical highland climate. That means the summers are relatively cool but the monsoon is what makes the region a bit moister than one would prefer.

So avoid the rainy season, and head towards the ‘Abode of clouds’ right now. Here are a few reasons what might be able to convince you.

1. Perfect Temperature in April


Around the March and April, the chilly winters bids adieu and makes room for the moist summers to hover over the region. But in between exchange of the seasons one can sneak in the best time of the city and that is during March and April. So get packing right now and move to the hills of this northeast India’s treasure of a city.

2. Umiam Lake


Just about half hour drive north of Shillong, you will be able to submerge yourself into complete bliss of a place called Umiam Lake. The lake was born due to a dam construction over Umiam River. This is perfect site for you to witness Mother Nature perfectly resting with man-made structures.

3. Elephant Falls


About 20 minutes’ drive from the city sits this beauty of nature. The place has three water falls which can be seen by hiking for 30-40 minutes. A must visit for all the photography crazy people.

4. Ward’s Lake


It may be a man-made lake yet this perfectly encapsulates the essence of nature in its raw form. The place is located in the city itself and with almost negligible population of the city this makes an ideal getaway for quiet contemplations.

5. Mawjymbuin Cave


Mawjymbuin Caves are located at a distance of 56 km from Shillong. These are natural caves with many natural formations inside as well. The Mawjymbuin Caves are located near one of the wettest parts of the earth Chirapunjee. Some other attractions located in the vicinity of the caves are Don Bosco Center for Indigenous Cultures.

6. Laitlum canyons


Perched at great heights, it is in fact the edge of a hill that is surrounded by green hills and valleys. The view of grassy beautifully layered rocky hills all around and minute villages far below just adds to the soothing view of the valley. Due to less marketing this place is still untouched by tourists like other places, so this makes it a must go to place for every nature lover.

7. Because it is India’s favorite hill station


In a recently held poll by HolidayIQ, people voted Shillong as the best hill station. Well given the fewer tourists flocking this hill station, this had to go on as the best place to visit. Do make sure you plan your trip ASAP to the beautiful place in the northeastern state of Meghalaya.
