A happy Ganesh Chaturthi to all and no festival in India is complete without the mouthful of sweets.

Yes, sweets and some of the best sweets you should try this Ganesh Chaturthi are here. These sweets are often served to Lord Ganesh as ‘naivedhyam’ or ‘bhog’. People in Maharashtra make modaks on the first day of the 10 day long festival.

Ladoos are believed to be Lord Ganesha’s favorite. There are many types of ladoos made of coconut, sabudana, besan, boondi and rava. Puran poli, Karanji and halwas are also prepared on this occasion.

Apart from the above sweets there are many other lip smacking delicacies made during this time. These include varan bhaat, alu vadi, moong dal khichdi, batata bhaji, rishi panchami sabzi, black pea (kala vatana) curry, rice pooris or wheat pooris and sundals.

This is one of the most popular sweet variety prepared during Vinayak Chaturthi in Maharashtra. This Maharashtrian recipe is made of rice flour, whole wheat flour or maida. The filling is generally made with sugar and dry fruits. You can also make them with a coconut and jaggery filling. You can either steam these modaks or fry them.

This is another popular recipe made during festive occasions in Maharashtra. This is a flat bread which is stuffed with lentil fillings prepared from skinned spilt bengal gram/chana dal and jaggery. In Marathi, puran means sweet filling and poli means outer covering.

This is one of the most popular Indian sweets. These ladoos are made from gram flour/besan and tend to melt in the mouth.

Another popular ladoo variety is made of sweetened roasted chickpea flour and sugar. It is generally spiced with cardamom and nutmeg. These ladoos are delicious and are made in all festive occasions.

This 'mithai' is specially made during the Ganesh festival. These are steamed rice rolls stuffed with fresh coconut and jaggery mixture. The technique of making this is unique, wherein these rolls are steamed in turmeric leaves to make them aromatic.
