First Monsoon Downpour After Onset In Delhi, Rainy Days Ahead
Delhi witnessed the much-awaited first monsoon downpour last evening. Some pockets were deluged with pouring rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Though the rainfall distribution was not equitable, most parts had at least moderate showers. Najafgarh received the highest with a huge 105.5 mm of rainfall, followed by Pusa, Ayanagar, and Ridge clocking 82 mm, 73 mm, and 69 mm respectively. Airport observatory Palam recorded the highest daily rainfall of this season with 60 mm till 8:30 AM. There was a short spell of another downpour this morning between 9 AM and 10:30 AM. Yesterday, six flights were diverted to Jaipur and Lucknow, and scores of flights were delayed due to inclement weather conditions.
Base station Safdarjung escaped the monsoon fury and recorded modest rainfall of 21 mm till this morning. And the rains are continuing. With this spell, the record station has registered a total of 40 mm of rainfall in July so far, against the monthly normal of 195.8 mm. More rains are predicted over the next one week.
There is a cyclonic circulation over the Haryana region in the lower levels. Another cyclonic circulation is marked over North Pakistan and border areas of Punjab. The trough connecting these two circulations is extending till the center of circulation over West Bengal and Jharkhand. The axis of this trough is running very close to the capital city and is likely to retain this position for the next few days. Oscillation of this trough will trigger intermittent rain and thundershowers during the day, with short breaks in between today. Weather conditions are likely to worsen again in the late evening/night and continue till tomorrow morning.
The approaching weekend will bring scattered patchy rains. One odd shower could be moderate or heavy as well. Rains are likely to spill over into the next week also. Moderate to heavy rain and showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are expected on 12th & 13th July and again on 15th & 16th July. Most of the intense weather activity is likely in the night hours.
